Abstract

Problem solving as essential daily life skill is important to be taught and provided to students, especially prospective mathematics teachers. Through Linear Program this qualitative study aims to describe the types of errors of prospective mathematics teacher students in solving optimization problems during online learning. Involving nine students of mathematics prospective teacher in the fourth semester this study used test and interview in collecting data. Based on the result of doing the test in the form of open-closed question of optimization problems, the subjects were interviewed in a semi-structured interview. The results of data analysis show that the types of errors made by the subject were conceptual and technical errors. Conceptual errors that occurred include being unable to apply or forgetting the concept of the probing line method, incorrectly making a mathematical model, being unable to determine or forgetting the concept of the variable to be used in the simplex method. Meanwhile, the technical error that occurred was error on doing calculation. These results imply that teachers need to familiarize students with solving similar problems and designing effective learning based on the types of errors found.
