Iqbal Tawakkalmiqbal.tawakkal@unugiri.ac.id
"The Pact of Umar," also known as "عهد عمر" (Ahd Umar), is a historical document attributed to Umar bin Khattab, the second caliph in Islam. It regulates the relationship between Muslim rulers and the non-Muslim communities residing in the newly conquered territories in the early seventh century CE. This research aims to conduct an in-depth analysis of this text with a focus on two main aspects: linguistic stylistics and the ideology reflected in the text. In the analysis of linguistic stylistics, we explore the use of specific words and phrases employed in the text. We find that the text begins with the phrase "بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم" (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful), which reflects reverence for religious values. Additionally, we observe the use of metaphors and symbolism that carry additional meanings, such as the use of the word "أَمَـانـاً" (security), which goes beyond physical protection to encompass the safety and tranquility of the community. In the analysis of ideology, we uncover a commitment to values such as religious tolerance, freedom of religion, and the role of a leader as a moral protector. The text asserts that non-Muslim communities will be granted protection and religious freedom without being forced to change their beliefs. This research provides a deeper understanding of Umar bin Khattab's worldview in managing newly conquered territories and the values he upheld. While the text has a specific historical context, the values reflected in it remain relevant in the context of interfaith dialogue and social harmony in today's diverse societies.
2023-09-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 Undergraduate Conference on Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and Literaturehttps://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/4422Sociolinguistic Analysis of Offensive Language Used in an American Sitcom Animation “The Family Guy" Season 212023-10-27T08:59:23+00:00Afan Gaffar Shiddiqafan@gmail.comSiti Musarokahsitimusarokah@upgris.ac.idRahmawati Sukmaningrumrahmawatisukma@upgris.ac.id
This study explored the categories or type of offensive languages and th function of offensive languages spoken by the characters in the animation “The Family Guy”. Conflict is the sensation of opposing or incompatible objectives, goals, beliefs, or actions. As a result, achieving both of these goals at the same time is impossible. This study investigates how fictional characters, specifically Harry Potter from J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" film, can symbolize aspects of our daily lives. Using psychological conflict theory, the main character's utterances to other characters will be classified into the following groups. The methods and tactics for collecting data, also known as documentation and observation data collection, include watching the film, taking notes, doing a detailed analysis, and arranging the data. Kurt Lewin's psychological conflict theory will be used to the main character's conflict, the strategy and method of data analysis will be descriptive qualitative with secondary data. In Kurt Lewin's theory, researchers will use three types of conflict: Approach-Approach Conflict, Avoidance-Avoidance Conflict, and Approach-Avoidance Conflict. In his film, he employs conflict. Avoidance-Avoidance The principal character has the most friction with the other characters. In contrast to the avoidance-avoidance conflict, the approach-approach conflict might emerge when a person is faced with two desired options but can only receive one. in this study, researchers found the results of the film, namely finding three approach-approach conflicts, four approach-avoidance conflicts and four avoidance-avoidance conflicts. in addition, researchers also found problem solving that occurred in the conflict to contribute to the teaching process. researchers hope that this research can be an inspiration and motivation for teachers in using films as media.
2023-09-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 Undergraduate Conference on Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and Literaturehttps://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/4443BTS’ SPEECH AND SPEECH ACTS: WHAT ARE THEY?2023-11-01T10:51:17+00:00Rr Maghfira Rista Fatwa Kusumamaghfira.fira0629@gmail.comJafar Sodiqjafarsodiq1967@gmail.comFaiza Hawafaizahawa01@gmail.com
This research analyzed the speech acts used in BTS’ Speech Video entitled “BTS Return to the United Nations | UNICEF” on YouTube. Given that textbooks are built upon certain cultural values and beliefs, it is not possible to teach language without teaching the culture. Several findings have found that English textbooks are written based on certain culture. Without careful examination and appropriate use of the textbooks, students might feel confused and end up adopting and using the language in the wrong context. Hence, this paper is intended to explain the reasons why English teachers should develop a broad cross-cultural understanding and how Indonesian English textbooks have embedded culture in their texts and images. To answer these purposes, the researcher uses qualitative descriptive method. Based on the analysis of the data, it is found that English teachers need the knowledge of different cultures, since it affects the lesson planning, teacher-student communication, and teacher-parent interaction, which are the major factors of students’ success in learning. Moreover, it is found that Indonesian English textbook provided by the government mostly represents Indonesian culture. In conclusion, English teachers in Indonesia have to develop cross-cultural understanding because it has to be taken into consideration whenever they plan a lesson and interact with the students and parents. Furthermore, since Indonesian English textbook provided by the government still adopts local and national culture, teachers have to add more exposure to different cultures to the students, so they will not be surprised when they talk with English users from different countries.
2023-09-25T00:00:00+00:00Copyright (c) 2023 Undergraduate Conference on Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and Literaturehttps://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/4462Modernisation in Teaching Adjective Vocabulary in Digital Era: Is Tiktok Effective to Use?2023-11-01T13:10:04+00:00Sekar Ayu Sukmawatisekarayusukmawati@gmail.comFaiza Hawafaizahawa01@gmail.comSiti Musarokahsitimusarokah@upgris.ac.id
Today's technology is becoming more complex, which is advancing the field of education.
