Indonesian Muslims can engage
with a worldwide audience while balancing tradition and modernity thanks to Islamic
English, a linguistic phenomenon that combines Islamic values with the English language.
It helps Indonesians maintain their religious identity while engaging in global discourse by
acting as a medium for education, interfaith discussion, and cultural expression. Using
language ethnography, content analysis, and document analysis, the study takes a
qualitative approach. Translations of Islamic texts, pesantren (Islamic boarding school)
curriculum, and online resources that use Islamic English to spread Islamic principles and
debunk myths about Islam are some examples of data sources.
The results show that Islamic English improves international communication by giving
Indonesians a forum to exchange moderate interpretations of Islam, get access to global
resources, and foster interfaith understanding. But there are obstacles to overcome, like a
lack of resources and cultural issues. Global alliances, digital education, and standardized
curricula are examples of growth opportunities. Islamic English is essential for maintaining
Indonesia's religious and cultural legacy in addition to being a tool for international
interaction. Indonesia shows its leadership in promoting a harmonious coexistence of faith
and modernity on the international scene by adopting this language strategy.
2026-04-10T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 Undergraduate Conference on Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and Literature https://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/7962 USING DISCOVERY LEARNING MODEL IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT: A CASE OF THE 7TH GRADES STUDENTS AT SMPN 1 KARANGAWEN IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2024/2025 2026-04-10T10:46:24+07:00 Annisa Octaviani AnnisaOctaviani@std.upgris.ac.id Maria Yosephi MariaYosephi@upgris.ac.id Siti Lestari SitiLestari@upgris.ac.id
This study examines the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model in improving descriptive writing skills
among junior high school students. The
findings indicate that the most frequently used translation technique is Literal Translation,
particularly when metaphors are conceptually universal or culturally shared, so it requires little
or no changes at all. Modulation is employed when the metaphor must be restructured in terms
of syntax or cognitive framing to maintain clarity and naturalness in the target language.
Adaptation is applied when culture-specific metaphors are encountered, requiring substitution
with equivalent imagery that resonates more effectively with the Indonesian audience. These
techniques reveal the translator’s critical role in maintaining both semantic meaning and
stylistic intent, especially in song lyrics where emotional resonance and rhythm are essential.
The study underscores the importance of cultural sensitivity, creative flexibility, and contextual
awareness in the translation of figurative language in musical texts. Through an in-depth
analysis of selected metaphorical lines, this research contributes to the field of metaphor and
audiovisual translation by offering insights into how popular song lyrics can be preserved,
transformed, and meaningfully interpreted across languages and cultures.
2026-04-01T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 https://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/7987 Enhancing Vocabulary By Using Duolingo : A Study At SMP N 1 Juwana 2026-04-10T14:47:16+07:00 Eka Putri Fitriani eekafitrian@gmail.com
This article explores the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in improving English
vocabulary acquisition among junior high school students. Conducted at SMPN 1 Juwana, the
study employs a quasi-experimental design involving two eighth-grade classes: one as an
experimental group using Duolingo, and the other as a control group receiving conventional
instruction. The study utilizes pre-test and post-test instruments comprising multiple-choice,
completion, and matching items, analyzed using SPSS version 25. Results show that the
experimental class achieved a significantly higher post-test mean score compared to the control
class (87.59 vs. 82.88), with a significance value of 0.000. The research focuses on identifying the types of grammatical mistakes,
determining their possible causes, and interpreting their influence on meaning. A descriptive
qualitative method was employed, using Harmer (2001) classification to categorize the mistakes
into six types: tense mistakes, subject-verb agreement mistakes, article misuse, preposition
mistakes, auxiliary verb misuse, and word order problems. The causes of the mistakes were
examined using the framework of Yusuf et al. (2021) and Utami & Mahardika (2023), which
distinguishes between interlingual and intralingual factors. The data were collected from five
students’ written English speech texts. The findings show that the most frequently observed
mistakes were word order problems, followed by tense mistakes and article misuse. In contrast, no
subject-verb agreement mistakes appeared in the dataset. The results further indicate that
intralingual factors, such as overgeneralization and incomplete understanding of grammar rules,
were the primary sources of mistakes. Meanwhile, several mistakes related to article and
preposition use were influenced by interlingual interference from Bahasa Indonesia. Overall, the
study concludes that the students’ grammatical mistakes mainly stem from their developing
knowledge of English rather than direct translation from their first language. It is therefore
recommended that English teachers emphasize grammar instruction focusing on verb usage, word
order, and article application to enhance students’ writing accuracy.
2026-04-01T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 https://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/7990 Translation Techniques Of Cultural Words Applied In “BUMI MANUSIA” Movie 2026-04-10T18:17:43+07:00 Ummi Putri Ruziqa uummi0265@gmail.com Jafar Sodiq JafarSodiq@gmail.com Nur Hidayat NurHidayat@upgris.ac.id
The translation of cultural words is uniquely challenging, requiring expertise and deep crosscultural understanding, as such terms often lack direct equivalents in other languages. This
study aims to identify the translation techniques applied by the translator in translating cultural
words in the Bumi Manusia movie. The source data used in this research consist of cultural
words in Indonesian and English subtitles in the Bumi Manusia movie. The researcher uses a
descriptive qualitative method. As a result, the researcher finds that there are 109 cultural words
in the Bumi Manusia movie, including terms related to ecology, material culture, social culture,
organization, and gestures. The results reveal that the cultural words that appear most
frequently in the Bumi Manusia movie are related to social culture, representing 36.4% of the
data. Moreover, the translator uses 8 techniques out of the 18 translation techniques proposed
by Molina and Albir to translate the cultural words found in the movie. These include 44
instances of calque, 36 literal translations, 9 descriptions, 7 amplifications, 5 borrowings, 3
generalizations, 3 reductions, and 2 transpositions. It can be concluded that calque is the most
frequently applied technique by the translator, followed by literal translation. The researcher
proposes that the reason why the translator uses the calque technique most frequently is to
maintain the originality and authenticity of cultural references. This approach aligns with the
foreignization ideology as articulated by Lawrence Venuti, emphasizing the preservation of the
source culture and encouraging the target audience to engage with its linguistic and cultural
nuances.
2026-04-01T00:00:00+07:00 Copyright (c) 2026 https://conference.upgris.ac.id/index.php/allure/article/view/7991 The Analysis of Translation Techniques used in Translating Slang words on Disney Cartoon ‘’Turning Red” 2026-04-10T18:19:50+07:00 Juniar Margareta juniarmargareta@gmail.com Rahmawati Sukmaningrum rahmawatisukma@upgris.ac.id Jafar Sodiq JafarSodiq@gmail.com
This study analyzes the translation techniques applied to slang words in Disney’s animated movie Turning Red.
Slang words, often culturally and socially embedded, pose challenges in translation, especially for films targeting
young audiences. The movie depicts a cultural conflict
between Rachel, a Chinese-American woman with an individualistic upbringing, and her lover
Nick Young's family, who embody a collectivist East Asian society. The cultural conflict
encompasses disparities in values, perceptions of social hierarchy, and methods of preserving and
negotiating "face" during conflict scenarios. This research aims to determine the cultural conflicts
Rachel encounters, the origins of these conflicts, and the reasons for their occurrence. This research
employs a descriptive qualitative methodology utilising a narrative analysis framework. The
results indicate that Rachel uses self-face to mutual-face tactics to address cultural constraints from
Nick's family, and through intercultural communication adaptation, she effectively navigates the
issue while preserving her identity. The research enhances comprehension of cross-cultural
communication, particularly in intercultural relationships and marriage.
