CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT FOUND IN BEFORE I FALL MOVIE AND ITS FEASIBILITY AS SOURCE TO TEACHING DRAMA

Abstract

This final project aimed at finding out of the character development in Before I Fall Movie and its feasibility as source to teaching drama. The main purpose of the study are to extend the knowledge of the characters, character developments, and the factors that influence the development of characters in Before I Fall Movie and to develop the teacher’s skill and ability in teaching drama. The method used in the analysis of this research was a qualitative research. The data were collected through the process of watching the movie, finding the character development and the factors that influence the development of the characters, and concluding of the analysis. The result of this research indicated that Samantha Kingston and Juliet Sykes are the dynamic characters in Before I Fall Movie. The factors that influence their development are internal and external. The internal factors that influence the development are mystery of nightmare, as Samantha tries to untangle the mystery of a life derailed, she must also unravel the secrets of people closest to her and discover how the power of a single day can make a difference until she gets everything in her life right. While external factors are Samantha’s family, Kent, best friend, and Juliet who always get the cruel bullying from Samantha and the gang. The researcher suggests teachers to apply Before I Fall Movie as media for teaching drama. Movie gives entertainment, it makes class fun and they can get the experiences of life. It also encourages students to talk about their feeling and option. They can explore the imagination, ideas, and thoughts in the story. Through watching movie, students can analyze the elements of the movie, because the aspects and elements that exist in the movie are almost similar to the drama, so by analyzing elements of the movie, indirectly they can apply it in drama. By watching movie the students can explore their knowledge about how to learn analyze the characterization and character development in the story. They can express the actors and actress with own style. They can be a protagonist or an antagonist in story. And also gives the students an ability to develop their imagination and gives the motivation based on the movie in order to apply it to their drama lesson. It also helps teachers to improve the techniques or methods for teaching drama.
