An Analysis of Directive Speech Acts Used by Raya as the Main Character in Raya and the Last Dragon Movie

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the directive utterances made by the main character, Raya, in the Raya and the Last Dragon film. As a result, this research will employ a descriptive qualitative approach. With the qualitative descriptive method, it is necessary to undertake an examination of the condition by describing, analyzing, and summarizing the data obtained in transcript form. The data are tallied and evaluated according to their subcategories of directive speech acts. The sort of speech act discovered during the research process is Directives Utterance. Divided into four categories, they are command, orders, requests, and suggestions (Yule 1996: 53). Additionally, there are 30 directive utterances recorded in Raya and The Last Dragon. There are ten data points (33 percent) for the command, nine data points (30 percent) for the request, four data points (13 percent) for the orders, and seven data points for the proposals (23 percent ). Thus, the total number of directed utterances made by the protagonist (Raya) in Raya and The Last Dragon is 30. Additionally, the graphic demonstrates that directive speech acts of command are the most prevalent type of speech in the Ray.
